A son of Montreal scored his first ever British Eventing (BE) victory at Nunney International Horse Trials (June 16-18), partnered by Tim Cheffings.
Winning an intermediate section, the Devon-based rider and Alinero Van Het Scharenberg scored 30.5 in the dressage phase, while a few time penalties from the cross-country and showjumping left them on a final score of 38.3 at this Somerset event.
The eight-year-old bay gelding was bought by Tim as a "just backed five-year-old" from Mark Bosanko.
"I've brought him up through the levels, and although he's a very good jumper I've worked hard on his dressage, but this was his best test to date," said Tim, of Tiverton.
"He gets quite excited so I have to try and keep him relaxed," added Tim, who hopes Alinero will go on to advanced level. "Our main aim for the season is the eight/nine-year-old championship at Blenheim Horse Trials in September, but our next outing will be Barbury, where we'll contest a two-star."
Talking about the course, Tim, who trains with Claire Samson, said: " It was a lovely track with a few questions that could catch you out. There were three water crossings, which gave us quite a bit of variety."
Sir Mark Todd finished second behind Tim riding Clone Rocket to a finishing score of 40.6.
Tim Cheffings also finished third in this section riding Donateur, a five-year-old by Lovefever, who started eventing in 2012. This was the 16hh gelding's first outing at novice level after a few top ten placings at BE100 level earlier this season including a first outing win at Moreton.
